Welcome!

Moot Hall bellsThe Moot Hall in Maldon is a Grade One listed building in the heart of this historic maritime Town. The building has many unique architectural features and has, in the last couple of Years, been extensively renovated by Maldon Town Council.

Although it is one of the 364 Grade One and Two listed buildings and artefacts in the Town, it has occupied a central role in Maldon’s local government for over 400 Years.

Following local government reorganisation in 1974, the historic Moot Hall was struggling to find a purpose. The Friends’ objective is to open this wonderful building up to be used and enjoyed by Maldonians and visitors to the town alike.

The Moot Hall has played a central part in the life of Maldon for over 400 years and, as such, is an ideal place for a living museum of Maldon life and social history over the centuries. Over time, we intend illustrating this story with real artefacts, waxwork figures and actors acting out specific events in the town’s history.

There will be special events, concerts and operas to mention just a few of the exciting programme ideas which we are currently working on.

Now read on to learn more of the unique history of the Moot Hall, to see some images of the building and to read of our plans for its future. We hope to see you soon when you come to visit in person.
